"He is old, though," Fae pointed out. "He was born in the 1800's, from what I've heard. Anyway, he just likes to mess with people. I'd avoid making Ms. Munroe angry, though. She's cool if you're on her good side, but she can make twisters and things, so...."
Fae shrugged and stood to take her tray to the used stack at the end of the food line. By the time she returned to the table, Pyro was practically begging the newcomer for a sparring match, powers and all. Marie was trying to be the voice of reason, but the trouble was that John hardly ever listened to anyone when he was determined to make a fool of himself. It went on, with Yin chiming in to tell him what a bull-headed idiot he was being, Yue doing her best to soften her twin's abrasive words, and Marie finally adding, "Besides, remember what happened last time you had a match? You ended up in the infirmary with broken ribs and a root through your leg."
Fae didn't interrupt this time. Usually, she played mediator, but the bickering was unexpectedly soothing today. It felt normal. Over the years, she had come to enjoy being a mutant, even found mundane uses for her power, but sometimes, it was still nice to feel like everyone else. I am not a freak, she thought contentedly.
